How to find and fix broken links on your website

Sep 20, 2026 ยท 1 min read

A broken link is the fastest way to lose a visitor. Finding them is simple once you know what to request.

A link check is one of the few audit steps that requires real network requests: every link must actually be fetched to know whether it works.

How the check works doctSite collects the unique links on your page, requests a sample of them in parallel and records the HTTP status of each response. Anything at 400 or above โ€” or a connection that fails outright โ€” is reported with its exact status.

Fixing what you find - Update the URL if the target simply moved. - Add a 301 redirect when you control the destination. - Remove the link when the resource no longer exists. - Replace placeholder links such as href="#" with real destinations.

Prevent them coming back Re-scan after each release. Broken links usually appear during redesigns, when slugs change or when an external site disappears.
